The electron, and other sub-atomic particles, are symbols of a mystery. It is easy to imagine the electron as a tiny ball, in orbit around a slightly larger ball – like a miniature solar system. But this picture is only a symbol; it is not reality itself: in fact we have to talk about the electron in a variety of ways, which seemingly are contradictory. The fact is, the electron is only a symbol – but that doesn’t mean of course that the symbol isn’t useful, nor that the electron doesn’t exist (we’re made of electrons). But the electron is certainly not a particle in a solid sense; rather, it is a mathematical entity – whoops! my whole way of thinking has dissolved into symbols!
In the times Paul when Paul was writing to the Corinthians, it seems that the headscarf was a significant symbol. People would look through this window onto something more important. Society has changed since then, and now the headscarf no longer has the same meaning. The Bible is very clear that love in the heart is great than any ritual on the outside. We’ll have to find a suitable symbol for our own times if we think that the original view through the window was important.
